
The Straubing Public Library is located in the historical “Salzstadel” close to the beautiful river Donau and offers more than 80.000 books, magazines, newspapers, audio books, DVDs, CDs and cassettes. Almost all of our media can be borrowed.
Our library stock can be found on two floors:
On the ground floor is the library for children with children`s books, audio cassettes and software for learning and playing. Adults find education books as well as books for sports, leisure and hobby. On the ground floor you also find magazines, children’s and family videos and DVDs and the café with daily newspapers.
On the second floor adults find fiction books, non-fiction books and audio books as well as Music CDs, reference books and maps. On the second floor we offer also special items for youth, senior citizens and foreign citizens.

Registration
For registration please bring your personal identity card or passport and your certificate of registration. You will be issued with a non-transferable library card. Children and young persons under 14 need their parents’ permission to register.
Fees and fines
For children up to 18 years, the library service is free of charge. The annual fee of adults is 15 EUR per year, reduced 8 EUR or 3 EUR for 1 month. Users in possession of a Straubingpass only pay 8 EUR per year.
We charge a fee if you do not bring back your media on time (0,10 EUR per day for children up to 18 years, 0,20 EUR for adults aged 18 and over). In addition, fees will be charged for renewing, for issuing a substitute library card, for reservations , for inter-library loans as well as for media not returned to the library.
Loan period
Books, audio books, maps and language courses can be borrowed for 4 weeks, while magazine, games, CD-ROMs only for 2 weeks. Music-CDs, console games and DVDs can be borrowed for 1 week.
Renewing Media
Your media can be renewed twice. It is not possible to renew a media if the media has been reserved by another user.

Should you need help with your literature search or require any information, please ask the librarians on the second floor.
Internet-service
Library computers for Internet research are available. The fee for 30 minutes internet-surfing is 1 EUR.
Inter-library loan
Literature, mainly required for academic purposes, which is not found in Straubing, can be obtained via inter-library loan. If you are interested, you will get further information at the information desk on the second floor.
A significant proportion of customers in the Straubing Library are children and young people.
The items for children in the children’s library range from picture books, children’s books, audio cassettes and software for learning and leisure. Story hours and picture book ´s cinema in the library are regular events for children.
The teen lounge “BlueOrange” offers special literature for young persons in the age of 13 to 20. Behind “BlueOrange” lies the idea of providing young people with their own reading and entertainment spaces, in which they can feel at ease discovering the enjoyment of reading and becoming familiar with library material. About 3.500 different items like magazines, the latest chart CDs, DVDs, games, console games, comics, mangas and books to the features lifestyle, action & fun, mystery, fantasy & sci-fi and jobs can be found. Many young people use the teen lounge to do their homework or to surf the Internet. Since January 2008 we offer a special service for pupils and students: after making an appoint we help and give advices how to find literature in the library to a special topic for presentations in schools.
The Library is working closely with the kindergartens and schools of Straubing and the neighbourhood to develop information skills and promote reading.
Special services for schools and kindergartens:
The “Leserakete” is a project for primary schools to support the acquisition of reading skills. Every year more than 70 primary classes and more than 1700 pupils in the age of 6 to 10 take part to the journey with the reading rocket. To reach the planet with the rocket each pupil has to read books and design the journey. A jury awards prizes to the best classes.
